In 1981 Roger Morrow won “the World’s Largest Candy Bar” in a pumpkin carving contest at the Plaza Super Jet. A colorized and enlarged copy of this photograph with Gary Sinclair and Don Lau hung on various walls of the Plaza for forty years. Several years ago, while visiting Wenatchee, he spotted the photo above one of our check stands and identified himself. He expressed an interest in obtaining the picture and left his name and phone number.
Much of the photo’s color had faded, so this year we commissioned Cathie Lau to paint the scene. When we took the old picture down and called Roger, he and his wife Chris drove from Puyallup the following weekend to claim his prize. Cathie and Abel Chavez surprised them with a framed proof of the painting that is now hanging above check stand two. While visiting with Roger, he recounted his mother having to take a hammer to the chocolate bar so that it could be shared with his class at Lincoln Elementary. What a Halloween treat to talk with Roger and share this decades old connection between our families.
